Group calls for 2nd dairy farm shut down, alleges animal abuse

One week after it announced an investigation into Larson Dairy Inc., the advocacy group Animal Recovery Mission is accusing a second Okeechobee County farm of animal abuse.

The group is asking law enforcement officers to bring criminal charges against owners and employees of family-owned Burnham Farms Inc. and that the farm be shut down. Group members said they saw animal abuse at the farm, founder Richard Couto said.

Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Michelle Bell said the office has received no complaints about the farm. The Sheriff’s Office issued no further comment.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has conducted two inspections this year before the allegations emerged. The investigations turned up few violations, most aimed toward equipment and milk storage. The only note concerning sanitary conditions at the farm was in late September for an excess of flies surrounding the milk room.

The Okeechobee County office of the Florida Health Department has never received a complaint about the Burnham farm, spokesman Brian Sell said.
